Artiflex view on tiers
Tier IV is overkill except for genuinely critical national infrastructure. Tier II is acceptable for SMB server rooms supporting workloads that can tolerate planned outages. Avoid the trap of certifying a tier you cannot operationally maintain. The most common failure mode is "we built Tier III but we run it as Tier I" because change management discipline never matched the design.
Step 2 · Build, Lease, or Colocate

Step 3a · Rack Selection
Rack depth and width determine what fits, how cabling routes, and whether liquid cooling can be added later. Get this wrong and you replace the rack, not the kit inside it.

The single most common data center mistake we see in UAE retrofits: insufficient power capacity per rack. Older buildings were sized for 2-4 kW racks. Modern compute easily fills 6-12 kW per rack, and GPU racks run at 30+ kW.

Step 3d · Cooling Architecture
Skip this section if you're going to colocation. The provider designs, owns and operates the cooling. If you're building or refreshing your own server room, UAE ambient (35-48°C summer, coastal humidity, dust) makes cooling the single largest operational expense.

Cooling Vendors to Shortlist
Schneider Electric (Uniflair) and Vertiv (Liebert) are the default choices for most UAE Tier-II / Tier-III builds. Pick whichever your M&E partner is certified on. STULZ and Rittal LCP are excellent for high-density and liquid-cooled deployments. For Tier-III / IV chilled-water plants, Munters, Trane and Daikin chillers are typically chosen at the M&E-engineering level rather than IT level.
Step 4 · Containment
Containment is the single most cost-effective cooling efficiency upgrade you can make to an existing data center. Returns are typically 15-25% reduction in cooling energy.

Both approaches require attention to: blanking panels in unused U-spaces, brush strips for cable cutouts, return-air ductwork, and matching CRAC supply / return setpoints.

DCIM software unifies asset, capacity, power, environmental and rack-level monitoring. For data centers above ~10 racks, manual spreadsheet management starts to fail.

UAE ambient (35-48°C summer, coastal humidity) makes sub-1.4 PUE structurally hard for own-DC builds without significant investment in cooling architecture. Realistic targets: 1.5-1.6 for in-row + cold-aisle containment, 1.4-1.5 for modern Tier-III chilled-water plants with economisers (limited UAE benefit), 1.3 or better for hyperscaler / large colo at scale. Sub-1.3 typically requires liquid cooling, which only justifies itself for high-density GPU workloads. Plan for measurable PUE from day one rather than 'we'll figure it out later'.
Probably not. Spreadsheet asset tracking, rack elevation diagrams in Visio, and a small CMDB (Netbox is open-source and free) cover most needs at that scale. DCIM starts paying for itself around 10-15 racks where capacity tracking, change auditing and environmental monitoring become operationally painful by hand. SaaS DCIM (Hyperview, Sunbird Cloud, EcoStruxure IT SaaS) has lowered the entry-cost barrier significantly, so if you can justify the spend, even smaller deployments benefit. We help size DCIM to actual operational maturity, not headline rack count.
You should not buy liquid cooling until you need it, but you should design the room so it can be added without rip-and-replace. That means electrical headroom for future high-density racks, raised-floor cutouts or overhead manifold routing pre-engineered, plumbing penetration paths reserved, and rack selection that supports rear-door heat exchangers or chilled-water doors when the day comes. Most modern enterprise builds in UAE we deliver in 2026 are 'liquid-ready' even if they ship with air cooling on day one.
