Barracuda Email Protection explicitly addresses all 13 email threat types: spam, malware, ransomware, phishing, spear phishing, domain impersonation, brand impersonation, business email compromise, lateral phishing, conversation hijacking, account takeover, data exfiltration, and graymail. Most competitors address only 7 to 9 of these categories.

Barracuda combines traditional gateway defence (filtering before mail reaches inboxes) with an API-based inbox layer that catches threats the gateway misses, including socially engineered attacks from internal compromised accounts that bypass perimeter filters entirely. Both layers share the same AI engine and global threat intelligence.

Barracuda's AI engine learns each organisation's unique communication patterns automatically from day one, no manual rules required. It detects executive impersonation, mid- and low-level employee impersonation, spoofed domains, typosquatted domains, and emails sent from free or personal email clients automatically.

When a threat is discovered post-delivery, Barracuda automatically identifies and removes all matching malicious emails from every user's inbox across the organisation simultaneously. Barracuda's Premium Plus plan includes full Microsoft 365 data protection, backing up Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, and Entra ID. With ransomware capable of encrypting an entire Microsoft 365 environment in under five minutes, an independent backup that ransomware cannot reach is the most effective recovery mechanism.

Barracuda detects compromised accounts by tracking suspicious login behaviour: impossible logins, failed sign-in spikes, new device access, and geographic anomalies. When an account takeover is confirmed, the compromised account is automatically contained and all fraud emails sent from it are identified and removed.
